صبح ازش بابت همه چیز تشکر کردم و با نیم ساعت تاخیر، چون نگار واقعا دختر قشنگیه، سر کارم رفتم. type='text'>The End of Five Years

My last grade in B.s have just announced. I am now officially an economics graduate student. So goodbye engineering! Goodbye UT! Goodbye ECE with all my hates and loves. Five years with all hopes and ambiguous ended. Five years with its happiness, disappointments and different emotions passed. And now this is me with a new future and study-field which I've chosen by myself. Maybe it is a way to escape from what I didn't like, But who cares that was the best I could do then.

Was this Five years the best days of life which elder had told? I know my feeling about that days may change but I'm so glad it ends now. I can't hide my hates about many behaviors, actions, teachers and students. And also there is no need to repeat all those friendship, histories and lovings which I can never forget.

We spend much of our times to connect and know each other just for couple of days. We'll separate our ways and forget each other after a while, except few ones. If we see each other then we can't have the same feeling of now, we will be more strange. I am going to join facebook(at last)to decrease this effect of separation. But it will be too moderated and limited.

Watching new students and remembrance of the first days of university makes me feel so aged. Our new department is only for graduate students which intensify that feels. Do I have the power of a new start or even continuing with new fields, new friends and new situation?

I think this weblog is more than just an experience for me now. I may move this weblog to a new address if I be in the mood.

Ps : This post is a draft and will change with the coming new emotions.

OF THE DIVISION OF LABOUR or why I don't wash the dishes

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
First, division improves dexterity which is possible when someone focuses on only one or two skills. Second, division saves time of starting and changing the jobs. And third, division of labor improves applications of machinery invented by workmen. Invention of a machine which does simple actions is easier than a multi-action one.

He is right about the advantages of labour division but, I want to show another advantage of it, which is the trade’s substance. Division of labour is exchanging the labour product even with money or commodity. Each labourer does his job and exchanges its product with another one’s. So let me explain the advantage of trade with an example.

Suppose I can even publish 5 posts in a day in my weblog or wash 20 dishes or a mixture of them. And my roommate can even publish 3 posts or wash 18 dishes in a day. And both of us like to read weblog posts (there is no difference between ours and no one else write in weblog) and use clean dishes. Someone may say that the cost of publishing a post for me is working 1/5 of a day and washing a dish costs working 1/20 of a day. And for my roommate it costs 1/3 of a day for each post and 1/18 day for each dish. So it is better for me to wash my dishes and write my posts and let my roommate do his owns because it costs me less in both washing and writing. But I want to say trading clean dishes and posts with my roommate may increase our both utilities.

If you look more careful you can find writing 5 posts for me costs not using 20 clean dishes, and washing 20 dishes costs not to read 5 posts. It means each post costs me 20/5 = 4 dirty dishes and each clean dish costs me not reading 5/20 = 1/4 post. But for my roommate each post costs him 18/3 = 6 dirty dishes and each clean dish costs 1/6 post. Economists call this way of cost measuring, “Opportunity Cost”. Opportunity cost is whatever must be given to obtain some item.

You can see my opportunity cost of dish washing is more than my roommate’s. And therefore his opportunity cost of post writing is more than mine. So I would post in my weblog all the day and will give some to my roommate. And he will wash the dishes and give some to me and we will live together more happy and with more weblog posts and clean dishes than before. Trade can benefit everyone because it allows people to specialize to activities which they have the “Comparative Advantages” or less opportunity costs.

Back to my topic, division of labor may decrease the total cost of a work if each labourer works in position which he has comparative advantage. I didn’t find this point in Adam Smith’s book but he was familiar with opportunity cost concept. I should stress that improvement in total utility in this case is not because of dexterity improvement.

If Smith didn’t die 230 years ago he might add this advantage in the “OF THE DIVISION OF LABOUR” chapter. May God bless him…

Let me start with a famous example of information economics called Lemons problem. It speaks about how bad (lemon) goods:) can put away the good stuffs from the market.

Suppose a used stuffs market which contains half with lemons and half with good stuffs. In this market people don’t know which one is bad and which one is good but they can find the scale of each kind of goods. The price of good stuffs reduces than the good stuffs market equilibrium because people can’t distinguish if it is a lemon or not. In the other hand the price of lemons increases from the separate market’s one. What will happen in this situation is the increase in the number of lemons and decrease in the number of good stuffs. Now people finds the market contains more than half with lemons and the rest with good stuffs. The equilibrium price will reduces then. People who have good stuffs will not sell their goods but the bad stuffs reduce too. If in this situation the scale of good stuffs in the market increases too, this process can continue till the market fills with lemons and no one sells her good stuffs. What has happened here was the failure in used good stuffs’ market because lake of information in the market. You can find this situation in the used car market where there is a common statement which says don’t buy a used car when you don’t know the seller! What control this market failure in real world are the foundations which share the information about the goods. For example the big and known brands and standards are such these foundations.

Now what is the relation between professional ethics and this example! Every one of us had heard the statements about un-ethical workers who don’t do their jobs completely. Let me explain it! Consider there is a labor market (for example houseman’s market) which you can’t find out if the worker does his job well or not but after a while. If there were no way to find out which worker is a good worker and which is a bad one the same thing like the Lemons problem (even worse) happen here. The good worker when sees the equilibrium price of his job is less than what he expected or if he finds out no one can punish him for bad working, will not have any stimulus for good working. The good works in this market increase and it fills with bad works after a while.

What can increase the ethical workers here is the same as goods market situation. The information should share by companies which sell the labor. Finding a well known company is easier than finding a good worker. The company rejects the bad workers and absorbs good ones to spread its reputation. In this case the ethic is not just for itself but it contains self benefits for workers. Maybe we shouldn’t call this ethics but we provide a situation in which ethics doesn’t have any cost for its follower and it has benefits either.

People Respond to Incentives

Today all cars have seat belts, but that was not true 40 years ago. In the late 1960s, Ralph Nader’s book Unsafe at Any Speed generated much public concern over auto safety. Congress responded with laws requiring car companies to make various safety features, including seat belts, standard equipment on all new cars.
How does a seat belt law affect auto safety? The direct effect is obvious. With seat belts in all cars, more people wear seat belts, and the probability of surviving a major auto accident rises. In this sense, seat belts save lives. But that’s not the end of the story. To fully understand the effects of this law, we must recognize that people change their behavior in response to the incentives they face. The relevant behavior here is the speed and care with which drivers operate their cars. Driving slowly and carefully is costly because it uses the driver’s time and energy. When deciding how safely to drive, rational people compare the marginal benefit from safer driving to the marginal cost. They drive more slowly and carefully when the benefit of increased safety is high. This explains why people drive more slowly and carefully when roads are icy than when roads are clear.
Now consider how a seat belt law alters the cost–benefit calculation of a rational driver. Seat belts make accidents less costly for a driver because they reduce the probability of injury or death. hus, a seat belt law reduces the benefits to slow and careful driving. People respond to seat belts as they would to an improvement in road conditions—by faster and less careful driving. The end result of a seat belt law, therefore, is a larger number of accidents. How does the law affect the number of deaths from driving? Drivers who wear their seat belts are more likely to survive any given accident, but they are also more likely to find themselves in an accident. The net effect is ambiguous. Moreover, the reduction in safe driving has an adverse impact on pedestrians (and on drivers who do not wear their seat belts). They are put in jeopardy by the law because they are more likely to find themselves in an accident but are not protected by a seat belt. Thus, a seat belt law tends to increase the number of pedestrian deaths.
At first, this discussion of incentives and seat belts might seem like idle speculation. Yet, in a 1975 study, economist Sam Peltzman showed that the auto-safety laws have, in fact, had many of these effects. According to Peltzman’s evidence, these laws produce both fewer deaths per accident and more accidents. The net result is little change in the number of driver deaths and an increase in the number of pedestrian deaths.

Mankiw.Principles of Economics

Hayek - part#1

Fredrich Hayek was an Austrian economist and philosopher and an important member of Austrian school of economics. He is well known because his defense of Liberalism against Socialism and Fascism and also his Nobel Prize in 1978. Here is something I think I know about his thoughts.

Hayek’s main criticism against socialism was based on the limits of man’s knowledge, he believed on. The human’s knowledge of his environment is abstract and the brain doesn’t understand the things in their complete reality. Our understanding is evolutionary and we can understand neither the environment nor our mind completely. so we should believe on our brain’s limits.
The orders in human’s life are built evolutionary and built with human’s actions not human’s design. Social order is like language. “Just as language is built with complex rules of grammar and it didn’t make with a special designer, social order is built with our regularity in our behavior -common law, ethics, and manner – whose importance we could fairly understand.” So there couldn’t be a social planner because of this lake of knowledge and the complexity of societies. Evolutionary wisdom doesn’t neglect the human’s thoughts’ effect in society. It can be useful in understanding the principles of orders and slow variation of them. But we should remember no one can rebuild an effective social order, because it has been built with many complexity and hundreds of thoughts and actions.
Civilization is built on evolution. There are evolutionary institutions that civilization based on. Liberalism is the rule of these institutions and principles. Hayek refuses the unlimited democracy and believes on rule of laws not rule of humans. Freedom is the most important institution which civilization based on. But human should neglect a part of it to defend the rest. One of the most important result of freedom is freedom in assets and so the free Market.

Hello bloggers' world

Why weblog?

At last I have decided to write my thoughts in weblog! But why? Here are some of my basic reasons for this weblog.

- Weblog is a good reason for writing and writing can categorize the separate thoughts. I have many flash thoughts which have no operative output. Writing can ...(fill it with a philosophic sentence) .

- Public writing can help to think more rationally about the ideas and the environment. When you want to write about an opinion you have to consider every part of the subject which is possible for you. It forces you to think about the world and not to pass the feelings and thoughts easily.

- Just like some of my friends, I am tired of wasting my time with people just for fun. Writing weblog makes me think, and these thoughts are a good subject for conversation. It happened many times, after a simple conversation I have completely changed my mind. Don’t make me talk about the advantages of speaking! Thank you!

- Comments can be constructive. But I don’t expect that this soon!

- It makes me feel more helpful. It can cause someone think about something!

- It can develop my writing and speaking ability.

- It might be not bad to be more objective!

- Why shouldn’t I think about a famous weblog that can help the spread of my reputation and my future work!

But why am I writing in English when I am not good enough in that? The answer is, I know I’m not good enough but this is a good practice to learn English (Hey friends please inform my grammatical and other mistakes). More over, I hope it encourages others who don’t like to waste time in reading English posts, to think about the importance of English. And hey, I have a worldwide personality and unfortunately English is the most common language in the world. I’ll give myself the chance to write Persian posts too.

What am I going to write in this blog? I really don’t know yet! But at this moment the plan is to write about my new learnings, thoughts and things I feel they may be helpful for others or me! And maybe my feelings but not too much!

At the end, your comments are our encouragement in this work! And don’t forget to talk about your opinions in both virtual and real world. Here was my first public post.
